Felt

2011: Felt, water, Mantra of the Irregular Verbs

The felt sculpture in the corner of an aquarium filled with water is accompanied by the Mantra of the Irregular Verbs printed on a clear acetate placed onto the glass wall of the aquarium.

The title of this piece builds on the double meaning of the word ‘felt’ referring not only to the medium but to the process of evoking memories.

When you study English and try to memorise the different forms of irregular verbs you repeat them until they become a rhythmic prayer, the Mantra of the Irregular Verbs.

How do our memories transform us? Are they escapism or are they cathartic?
